Anhalt-Bernburg Coin List
The Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg was a sovereign state of the Holy Roman Empire and later of the German Confederation. It existed from 1252 until 1863, when it was unified with other Anhalt duchies. During its existence, Anhalt-Bernburg minted its own coins, which are of great interest to numismatists and historians.
History and government of Anhalt-Bernburg
Anhalt-Bernburg emerged from the partition of the principality of Anhalt in the 13th century. Ruled by the House of Ascania, the duchy underwent several territorial and political changes throughout its history. During the Reformation period, the duchy converted to Lutheranism. In the 19th century, Anhalt-Bernburg joined the Rhine Confederation and later the German Confederation. The last duke, Alexander Karl, died without heirs in 1863, leading to the unification of Anhalt-Bernburg with the other Anhalt duchies under the rule of the Duke of Anhalt-Dessau.
Coins of Anhalt-Bernburg
Anhalt-Bernburg coins reflect the rich history of the duchy and are highly prized by collectors. During the 18th century, the duchy minted silver talers showing the coat of arms of the House of Ascania and the portrait of the reigning duke. In the 19th century, Anhalt-Bernburg adopted the decimal system and began minting coins in pfennig and groschen denominations. One of the most notable issues was the "Ausbeutetaler" or mining taler, minted from silver extracted from the duchy's mines. These coins often featured elaborate designs commemorating the local mining industry. The last series of Anhalt-Bernburg coins, issued shortly before its unification with the other Anhalt duchies, is particularly rare and sought after by collectors.
