Hollenzollern-Sigmaringen Coin List

The House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen played a crucial role in the history of Germany and the German states during the 19th and 20th centuries. This branch of the Hohenzollern dynasty ruled the principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen until its incorporation into Prussia in 1850, leaving a lasting legacy in the politics and numismatics of the region.

History and government of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen

The principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was established in 1576 as a result of the division of the Hohenzollern territories. For nearly three centuries, the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen princes ruled their small state with relative autonomy within the Holy Roman Empire and, later, the Germanic Confederation. The family gained international prominence when Charles Antony of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen renounced his rights to the principality in 1849, paving the way for Prussian annexation. This strategic move strengthened ties with the main Hohenzollern branch in Prussia and raised the family's profile in European politics, culminating in the ascension of Charles I to the Romanian throne in 1866.

Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen Coins

Coins minted during the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen rule are numismatic treasures that reflect the history and sovereignty of the principality. Prior to 1850, the principality issued its own coins, including silver kreuzer and gulden. These pieces typically featured the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen coat of arms or the portrait of the reigning prince on the obverse, while the reverse showed the denomination and year of mintage. One of the most notable issues was the "Konventionstaler" of 1830, minted during the reign of Prince Charles. After incorporation into Prussia, local coins were gradually replaced by Prussian coinage, although some special commemorative issues celebrating the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen heritage were allowed, making them highly coveted pieces by modern collectors.
