Hamburg (1675-1872) Coin List
The free and imperial city of Hamburg experienced a period of great prosperity and development between 1675 and 1872. During this time, the city established itself as an important commercial and financial center in Northern Europe, which was reflected in its monetary system and the coins minted in the city.
Economic development and monetary system
Hamburg benefited greatly from its strategic location on the Elbe River, which allowed it to become a key point for international trade. The city adopted the Hamburg mark as its main monetary unit, which was divided into 16 shillings, each of which was equivalent to 12 pfennigs. The most common coins during this period included gold ducats, silver thalers and various smaller denominations in silver and copper. The Hamburg Mint, established in the 16th century, continued to produce high-quality coins that were widely accepted throughout the North Sea and Baltic region.
Political influence and monetary changes
Despite maintaining its status as a free city, Hamburg was not exempt from external influences and political changes. The French occupation during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century led to the temporary introduction of the French franc. After Napoleon's defeat, Hamburg regained its independence and its traditional monetary system. However, German unification in 1871 marked the end of Hamburg's monetary autonomy. In 1873, the city adopted the Deutsche Mark as its official currency, ending centuries of independent coinage. The last of Hamburg's own coins, issued in 1872, represent the end of a numismatic era that reflected the wealth and independence of this prosperous Hanseatic city.
