Greenland Coins

Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, uses the Danish krone (DKK) as its official currency. Despite its special status, Greenland has no currency of its own and relies on the Danish monetary system for its economic transactions.

Monetary history

Prior to the adoption of the Danish krone, Greenland used a barter system based on furs and other natural resources. The introduction of Danish currency occurred gradually as the European presence on the island increased. During the 20th century, special Greenlandic banknotes were issued by the National Bank of Denmark, although these are no longer in circulation.

Greenlandic Numismatics

Although Greenland does not issue its own currency, there are commemorative and collector coins related to the island. These pieces, usually minted by the Royal Danish Mint, commemorate important events or cultural aspects of Greenland. A notable example is the "Thule" coin series, issued in 2007, which depicts Inuit culture and Arctic fauna and is highly appreciated by collectors around the world.
