Guam Coins
Guam, an unincorporated territory of the United States, uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency. This small Pacific island has a unique monetary history that reflects its colonial past and current political status.
Current currency in circulation
Since 1950, the U.S. dollar has been the only legal tender in Guam. The same bills and coins are used as on the U.S. mainland, including the $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills, as well as the 1-cent, 5-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent and $1 coins. Although Guam does not issue its own currency, commemorative coins related to the island are occasionally minted as part of the U.S. quarter dollar program.
Monetary History and Highlights
Prior to the adoption of the U.S. dollar, Guam used a variety of currencies throughout its history. During the Spanish colonial period, Spanish and Mexican coins circulated. After the acquisition of Guam by the United States in 1898, the Philippine peso was introduced and used until 1950. A significant numismatic milestone occurred in 2009, when a commemorative Guam quarter dollar was issued as part of the U.S. Territories series, featuring the outline of the island, a traditional Chamorro boat prow and the inscription "Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro" (Guam, Land of the Chamorros).
