Federal Era (1823-1829) Coin List

The Federal Era in Guatemala, which lasted from 1823 to 1829, was a crucial period in Central American history marked by the formation of the Central American Federation. During this time, important political and economic changes took place, which were reflected in the minting of its own coins.

Historical and political context

After the independence of Central America in 1821, Guatemala joined the Central American Federation in 1823. This new political system sought to unify the former provinces of the Kingdom of Guatemala under a federal government. However, tensions between the member states and disputes over central power led to constant conflict. Liberalism and conservatism clashed continuously, which affected the stability of the region and, consequently, its monetary system.

Monetary system and coinage

During the Federal Era, Guatemala began to mint its own coins, although initially it continued to use the Spanish monetary system. The first federal issues included silver reales and gold escudos, which bore inscriptions such as "Republica del Centro de America" or "Provincias del Centro de America". These coins usually featured the emblem of the Federation, which consisted of five mountains (representing the five states) under a Phrygian cap, symbol of liberty. The Guatemalan Mint, established in colonial times, continued to function during this period, adapting to the new needs of the federation and producing coins that reflected the emerging political identity of the region.
