Kingdom of Hungary (1705-1856) Coin List
The Kingdom of Hungary underwent major political and monetary changes between 1705 and 1856. During this period, the country went through various stages of government, from the war of independence of Franz II Rákóczi to the Habsburg domination. The coins minted at this time reflect the turbulent history of the kingdom and the changes in its monetary system.
War of Independence and Emergency Coins
The War of Independence led by Franz II Rákóczi (1703-1711) marked the beginning of this period. During the conflict, emergency coins known as "libertás" were minted, bearing patriotic inscriptions and symbols of freedom. These pieces, made of copper and silver, were used to finance the fight against the Habsburgs. After the defeat of Rákóczi, the Kingdom of Hungary came under the control of the House of Habsburg, and the Austrian monetary system based on the florin and the kreuzer was introduced. The mints of Kremnitz (Körmöcbánya) and Nagybánya continued to mint Hungarian coins, but now with the portraits of the Austrian emperors.
Monetary Reforms and the Convention of 1753
In 1753, a major monetary reform known as the Monetary Convention was implemented. This reform established the "convention guilder" as the main monetary unit, divided into 60 kreuzer. Coins minted under this system included denominations such as the thaler (2 guilders), the half thaler, and various fractions of the guilder in silver. Copper coins of lesser value were also issued. During the Napoleonic Wars, Hungary experienced significant inflation and the issuance of emergency paper money. In 1816, a new monetary unit, the Austrian forint, was introduced and remained in circulation until the decimal reform of 1857. Coins of this period often featured elaborate designs, including the Hungarian coat of arms and detailed portraits of the Habsburg monarchs, reflecting the complex relationship between Hungary and the Austrian Empire.
