Tuscany Coin List
Tuscany, a historic region of Italy, witnessed a rich numismatic tradition for centuries. From medieval times to the 19th century, this Italian region minted a variety of coins that reflected its economic and political power, as well as its changes in government over time.
The Florentine: the gold coin that dominated Europe
The Florentine or gold florin was undoubtedly the most emblematic coin of Tuscany. First minted in Florence in 1252, this 3.5 gram pure gold coin quickly became the reference currency for international trade. Its design, featuring the Florence lily on the obverse and St. John the Baptist on the reverse, remained virtually unchanged for centuries. The stability and purity of the Florentine made it the currency of choice for commercial transactions throughout Europe, contributing significantly to the wealth and power of the Republic of Florence.
Monetary diversity in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany
With the formation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1569, the region experienced further diversification in its monetary system. In addition to the Florentine, other denominations such as the silver testone, the giulio and the copper quattrino were minted. During the rule of the Medici and later the House of Lorraine, Tuscan coins reflected the political and artistic changes of the time. A notable example was the francescone or leopoldino, a silver coin introduced in 1738 that bore the portrait of the Grand Duke on the obverse and the Tuscan coat of arms on the reverse. This monetary diversity continued until the unification of Italy in 1861, when the Tuscan coins were replaced by the Italian lira.
