Tassarolo Coin List

The Marquisate of Tassarolo, located in the Liguria region of northern Italy, was a small feudal state that existed from the 13th century until the early 19th century. During its existence, Tassarolo minted its own coins, making it an interesting object of study for numismatists and historians.

History and government of Tassarolo

Tassarolo was ruled by the Spinola family, a powerful Genoese dynasty, from 1560 to 1797. The marquisate enjoyed a certain autonomy within the Holy Roman Empire, which allowed it to mint its own coinage. This privilege was granted by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1560 and subsequently confirmed by other emperors. The minting of coins not only had an economic purpose, but also served as a symbol of the sovereignty and prestige of the marquisate. Despite its small size, Tassarolo managed to maintain its independence until the Napoleonic invasion of Italy in the late 18th century.

Coins of Tassarolo

Tassarolo coins are highly prized by collectors due to their rarity and artistic quality. The Tassarolo mint produced a variety of denominations, including gold escudos, silver talleri, and copper coins of lesser value. These pieces generally featured the Spinola family coat of arms or the portrait of the reigning marquis on the obverse, while the reverse usually showed religious or imperial symbols. A distinctive feature of Tassarolo coins is the inscription "TASSAROLI", which clearly identifies them. Coin production in Tassarolo reached its peak in the 17th century, under the rule of Filippo Spinola, who issued a series of high-quality coins that imitated those of larger states such as Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. These imitations, although technically illegal, were common at the time and reflected Tassarolo's ambition to be recognized as a full-fledged sovereign state.
