Kingdom of Naples (1621-1734) Coin List

The Kingdom of Naples experienced a turbulent and fascinating period between 1621 and 1734, marked by significant political and economic changes. During this time, the kingdom was under the dominion of the Spanish and later Austrian Crown, which had a significant influence on its monetary system and coinage.

Spanish rule and monetary system

Under Spanish Habsburg rule, the Kingdom of Naples maintained a monetary system based on the silver carlino and the gold ducat. The most common coins were the copper tornesi, used for everyday transactions, and the silver carlini, which served as a reference coin. During this period, coins were minted with the portraits of Spanish monarchs, such as Philip IV and Charles II. The economic crisis of the 17th century affected the quality of the coinage, leading to a progressive devaluation of the Neapolitan coinage.

Austrian transition and monetary reforms

With the War of the Spanish Succession and the subsequent Austrian rule from 1707, the Neapolitan monetary system underwent significant changes. The Austrian Habsburgs introduced new denominations, such as the 10 grana carlino and the 100 grana ducat. In addition, reforms were carried out to improve the quality of the mintages and stabilize the value of the coinage. During this period, Neapolitan coins began to display Austrian imperial symbols, such as the double-headed eagle, along with the traditional arms of the Kingdom of Naples. These monetary transformations reflected the political and economic changes that the kingdom underwent until the arrival of the Bourbons in 1734.
