Lombardy-Venice (1815-1886) Coin List
The Kingdom of Lombardy-Venice, established in 1815 following the Congress of Vienna, was a state of the Austrian Empire that encompassed the territories of northern Italy. During its existence, which lasted until 1866, this kingdom issued a series of distinctive coins reflecting its unique status within the empire and its Italian heritage.
Monetary system and coinage
The monetary system of Lombardy-Venetia was based on the Austrian lira, which was divided into 100 centesimi. Coins minted included denominations in centesimi, soldi and lire. The main mints were located in Milan and Venice, producing coins with designs that combined Austrian and Italian elements. A notable feature was the Habsburg double-headed eagle on the obverse, while the reverse often featured the value and a laurel wreath. Higher denomination coins, such as the 5 lire, were particularly prized for their silver content and exquisite mintage.
Political and numismatic changes
As the Italian unification movement gained momentum, coin production in Lombardy-Venetia underwent changes. After the loss of Lombardy in 1859, the Milan mint closed, and production was concentrated in Venice. The last coins of the kingdom were struck in 1866, just before Venice joined the Kingdom of Italy. These final pieces are particularly valued by collectors because of their rarity and historical significance. After 1866, standard Italian coins gradually replaced the Lombardy-Venice coins in circulation, marking the end of a unique numismatic era that had lasted more than half a century.
