Reign of Napoleon (1807-1814) Coin List
The Kingdom of Italy under Napoleon Bonaparte was a satellite state of the French Empire that existed from 1805 to 1814. During this period, major changes were implemented in the administration, economy and monetary system of the region.
Administrative and economic reforms
Napoleon introduced significant reforms in the governmental and economic structure of the Kingdom of Italy. A centralized system of government was established, infrastructure was modernized and industrialization was promoted. The Napoleonic Code was implemented, bringing changes to the legal system. In addition, trade was encouraged and new trade routes were developed, which contributed to the economic growth of the kingdom. These reforms laid the foundations for the modernization of Italy, although they also generated resistance among some sectors of the population.
Monetary system and coinage
One of the most significant reforms was the introduction of a new monetary system based on the Italian lira. This system, inspired by the French franc, replaced the various local currencies that had previously circulated. The new coins, minted at the Milan Mint, featured the portrait of Napoleon and symbols of the French Empire. Gold (40 and 20 lire), silver (5, 2 and 1 lire) and copper (soldi) coins were issued. These pieces are now coveted by collectors due to their historical importance and mintage quality. Monetary uniformity facilitated trade and strengthened the economic integration of the kingdom with the rest of the Napoleonic empire.
