Jersey Coins

Jersey' s numismatics are fascinating and unique. This British Crown dependency located on the English Channel has its own currency, which circulates alongside the British pound sterling. Throughout its history, Jersey has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting its rich cultural and economic heritage.

Current currency in circulation

Currently, the official currency of Jersey is the Jersey pound, which is at parity with the British pound sterling. The monetary system includes coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 pence, as well as 1 and 2 pounds. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 pounds. These coins and banknotes feature unique designs that reflect Jersey's culture and history, including images of British royalty and local symbols such as the Jersey coat of arms.

Monetary History and Highlights

Prior to the introduction of the Jersey pound in 1834, the island used a variety of French and British coins. An important milestone in Jersey numismatics was the issuance of its first banknotes in 1797. During the German occupation in World War II, Jersey was forced to issue emergency banknotes, which are now highly valued collector's items. In 1983, Jersey introduced its first commemorative one-pound coin, marking the beginning of a tradition of minting special coins to commemorate significant events in the island's history.
