Jordan Coins
The official currency of Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar, which is divided into 1000 fils. The Jordanian dinar has been the country's currency since 1950, replacing the Palestinian pound after Jordan's independence from the British Mandate.
Current currency in circulation
The current Jordanian dinar is issued in banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 dinars, and in coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 piastres, as well as 1 dinar. The banknotes feature portraits of Jordan's Hashemite kings and important historical sites in the country. The Central Bank of Jordan is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the Jordanian dinar, the region used various currencies, including the Ottoman dinar and the Egyptian pound. An important milestone in Jordanian numismatics was the introduction of the first series of coins in 1949, which included fils and dinar denominations. In 2002, Jordan issued a commemorative 1 dinar coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of King Hussein's coronation, marking a significant event in the country's numismatic history.
