Kyrgyzstan Coins
The official currency of Kyrgyzstan is the Kyrgyz som, introduced in 1993 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The current monetary system consists of banknotes and coins, with denominations reflecting the country's history and culture.
Monetary history
Prior to independence in 1991, Kyrgyzstan used the Soviet ruble. After the dissolution of the USSR, the country temporarily adopted the Kyrgyz ruble in 1992, before introducing the som in May 1993. This transition marked an important milestone in the country' s economic sovereignty and allowed Kyrgyzstan to have control over its monetary policy.
Numismatic highlights
Kyrgyzstan has issued several commemorative coins since its independence, highlighting themes such as local wildlife, historical figures and cultural events. One notable event was the issuance of the country's first gold coin in 1996, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the national epic "Manas". In addition, in 2009, Kyrgyzstan launched a series of bimetallic coins to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the som, demonstrating the evolution and modernization of its monetary system.
