Old Lats (1922-1940) Coin List

The Old Lats era in Latvia, which lasted from 1922 to 1940, was a crucial period in the monetary history of the Baltic country. During these years, Latvia underwent a significant economic transformation, reflected in the introduction and circulation of its own national currency.

Introduction of the Lats and its economic impact

The Latvian lats was officially introduced in 1922, replacing the Latvian ruble that had been used briefly after the country's independence. This new currency was divided into 100 santimi and both coins and banknotes were minted. The first lats coins were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 santimi, as well as 1 and 2 lats. These pieces, made mainly of nickel and bronze, featured designs reflecting Latvian national identity, including the country's coat of arms and folkloric motifs. The introduction of the lats helped stabilize the Latvian economy and provided a solid foundation for trade and economic development during the interwar period.

Evolution and characteristics of Old Lats coins

Throughout their existence, Old Lats coins underwent several modifications and special issues. In 1931, a 5 Lats silver coin was introduced, which became one of the most iconic pieces of the era, popularly known as "Milda" due to the depiction of a Latvian maiden on the obverse. In addition, commemorative coins were issued to celebrate important events, such as the tenth anniversary of Latvian independence in 1928. The mintage quality of these coins was remarkable, reflecting the national pride and economic prosperity of the period. However, the circulation of the Old Lats came to an end in 1940 with the Soviet occupation of Latvia, marking the end of a significant era in the country's numismatic history.
