Latvia - Old Lats (1922-1940) Coins

Latvia, a Baltic country that is a member of the European Union, adopted the euro as its official currency on January 1, 2014. This transition marked an important milestone in the country's monetary history, replacing the Latvian lats that had been the national currency since 1993.

Latvian monetary history

Prior to the adoption of the euro, Latvia used the lats as its national currency for more than two decades. The lats was reintroduced in 1993, following the country's independence from the Soviet Union, replacing the Soviet ruble. During this period, the Bank of Latvia issued a series of commemorative coins reflecting the country's rich history and culture, including pieces dedicated to historical events, prominent personalities and national symbols.

Latvian Numismatics and the Euro

With the adoption of the euro, Latvia has continued its numismatic tradition. The country has issued euro coins with unique national designs, such as the profile of a Latvian maiden on the €1 coin, symbolizing national freedom and independence. In addition, Latvia has produced several commemorative €2 coins with themes of national and international importance, such as the one dedicated to the historical region of Latgale in 2017 and the one commemorating the centenary of the Baltic States in 2018, demonstrating the continuity of its rich numismatic tradition in the euro era.
