New Litas (1993-2014) Coin List
The New Litas was the official currency of Lithuania from 1993 to 2014, marking a significant period in the country's economic history following its independence from the Soviet Union. This currency played a crucial role in stabilizing the Lithuanian economy and preparing the country for its eventual integration into the Eurozone.
Introduction and characteristics of the New Litas
The New Litas was introduced on June 25, 1993, replacing the talonas, a temporary currency used after independence. The monetary system was based on 100 centas to 1 litas. New Litas coins were minted in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 centas, as well as 1, 2 and 5 litas. These pieces featured designs reflecting Lithuanian culture and history, including the national coat of arms, the Vytis (Knight), and important historical figures such as Grand Duke Gediminas on the 1 litas coin.
Evolution and legacy of the New Litas
During its two decades of circulation, the New Litas remained a stable and reliable currency, contributing significantly to Lithuania's economic growth. In 2002, the litas was pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 3.4528 litas per euro in preparation for the eventual adoption of the European currency. This stability helped to attract foreign investment and improve confidence in the Lithuanian economy. On January 1, 2015, Lithuania officially adopted the euro, marking the end of the New Litas era. However, litas coins remain objects of interest to collectors, representing an important period in Lithuania's monetary history and symbolizing the country's transition to a modern market economy and its integration into the European Union.
