Lithuania - Old Litas (1922-1941) Coins
Lithuania, a Baltic country member of the European Union, has a rich numismatic history. Currently, the official currency in circulation is the euro, adopted in 2015. However, its monetary past and the milestones in its numismatics reflect the historical and cultural evolution of this nation.
Predecessor monetary history
Prior to the adoption of the euro, Lithuania's official currency was the litas, reintroduced in 1993 after the country's independence. The litas replaced the Soviet ruble and remained the national currency for more than two decades. During this period, the Bank of Lithuania issued several commemorative series celebrating the country's history, culture and achievements.
Milestones in Lithuanian numismatics
Lithuanian numismatics has experienced several significant milestones. In 1999, Lithuania issued the first commemorative gold coin since its independence, dedicated to the 750th anniversary of the coronation of King Mindaugas. Another highlight was the issuance of the 50 litas coin in 2013, commemorating the Lithuanian presidency of the Council of the European Union, this being the last commemorative coin issued before the adoption of the euro.
