Lundy Coins
The island of Lundy, located in the Bristol Channel, has a fascinating monetary history that reflects its unique status as a private estate. Throughout the 20th century, Lundy issued its own coins, creating a unique monetary system that has captivated collectors and numismatists around the world.
The Lundy Puffin
In 1929, the island's then owner, Martin Coles Harman, introduced the "Puffin" as the local currency. This unit of currency, equivalent to a British penny, featured the design of a puffin on one side. Coins of half puffin and one puffin were minted and circulated in the island until 1930, when the British authorities declared illegal its use as currency.
Numismatic legacy
Although the Puffin ceased to be legal tender, Lundy continued to issue commemorative stamps and coins that became coveted collectors' items. In 1965, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Harman's ownership, a special series of Puffin coins was issued. More recently, in 2011, the island released a commemorative gold coin to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Lundy Lighthouse, cementing its place in numismatic history.
