North Macedonia Coins

The official currency of North Macedonia is the Macedonian denar, introduced in 1992 after the country's independence. The numismatics of this Balkan nation reflect its rich history and its evolution as an independent state.

Current currency and circulation

The Macedonian denar is divided into 100 deni and is available in 1, 2, 5 and 10 denar coins, as well as 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 denar banknotes. The National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency. The designs of the coins and banknotes usually depict historical figures, monuments and national symbols important for the cultural identity of the country.

Monetary and numismatic history

Prior to the introduction of the denar, North Macedonia used the Yugoslav dinar as part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Macedonian numismatics also includes ancient coins of the Kingdom of Macedonia, such as those minted during the reign of Alexander the Great. An important milestone in the country's modern numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 2008 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of independence, marking a significant moment in the assertion of national identity through coinage.
