Malawi Coins
The official currency of Malawi is the Malawian kwacha, which is divided into 100 tambala. Introduced in 1971, this currency has undergone several changes throughout its history, reflecting the economic and political evolution of the country.
Current currency in circulation
The current Malawi kwacha is issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 kwacha. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5 and 10 kwacha. The designs of these pieces usually feature motifs of local fauna and flora, as well as important national symbols, such as the Malawian coat of arms.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the introduction of the kwacha, Malawi used the Rhodesian and Nyasaland pound until independence in 1964. Subsequently, the Malawi pound was adopted until 1971. An important milestone in Malawi's numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1978 to celebrate the country's 10th anniversary of independence. In addition, in 2012, Malawi experienced a significant devaluation of the kwacha, leading to the introduction of higher denomination banknotes to cope with inflation.
