The historical and monetary context
After the consummation of independence in 1821, Mexico faced the challenge of establishing its own monetary system. During Guerrero's brief term of office in 1829, the country still used the Spanish decimal system, but was beginning to introduce changes. Provincial mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango, continued to mint coins with designs similar to the colonial ones, but incorporating national symbols such as the eagle on the nopal cactus.
