Guerrero Coin List

The era of Vicente Guerrero in Mexico was a crucial period in the country's numismatic history. As one of the leaders of independence and later president, Guerrero left a significant mark on coinage during the transition from New Spain to independent Mexico.

The historical and monetary context

After the consummation of independence in 1821, Mexico faced the challenge of establishing its own monetary system. During Guerrero's brief term of office in 1829, the country still used the Spanish decimal system, but was beginning to introduce changes. Provincial mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango, continued to mint coins with designs similar to the colonial ones, but incorporating national symbols such as the eagle on the nopal cactus. These pieces, known as "transition coins", reflected the mixture of tradition and innovation characteristic of the era.

Coins of the Guerrero era

Although Guerrero's presidential term was short, his influence was reflected in the numismatics of the era. Coins minted during this time featured the national coat of arms on the obverse, while the reverse maintained the design of the columns of Hercules with the inscription "INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD" (INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM). The quality of these mintages varied significantly among the different provincial mints, due to the technical and economic difficulties faced by the young country. Some notable pieces from this period include silver reales and gold ounces, which today are highly valued by collectors due to their historical importance and relative scarcity.
