Monaco - Ancient franc (1837-1960) Coins

The Principality of Monaco, one of the smallest states in the world, has a fascinating numismatic history. Although it currently uses the euro as its official currency, its monetary past is rich and diverse, reflecting the historical and economic evolution of this microstate.

Current currency and its adoption

Monaco adopted the euro as its official currency in 2002, replacing the Monegasque franc. Despite not being a member of the European Union, Monaco has a special agreement that allows it to mint its own euro coins with national designs on the reverse. These coins are highly prized among collectors due to their low mintage and unique designs that often depict the princely family or important events in the principality.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the euro, Monaco used the Monegasque franc, which was on par with the French franc. Monaco's numismatic history dates back to the 17th century, when the first coins were minted under the reign of Honoré II. An important milestone was the issuance of the first gold coin in 1640, known as the "Louis d'or". Over the centuries, Monaco has issued commemorative coins of great numismatic value, including the famous 100 franc gold coin series of 1884, considered one of the rarest and most valuable in the world.
