Mozambique - Portuguese Colony Coins
The official currency of Mozambique is the metical, introduced in 1980 after the country's independence. Mozambican numismatics reflect the rich history and political changes of this African nation.
Current currency and its history
The metical is divided into 100 cents and its ISO code is MZN. Prior to its introduction, Mozambique used the Mozambican coat of arms, inherited from the Portuguese colonial era. In 2006, a monetary reform was implemented that introduced the "new metical", equivalent to 1000 old meticals, to combat inflation.
Numismatic milestones
Among the numismatic highlights in Mozambique is the issuance of commemorative coins celebrating local fauna and historical events. In addition, the country has issued banknotes with colorful designs depicting Mozambican culture and biodiversity. An important milestone was the introduction of bimetallic coins in 2006, improving the security and durability of the circulating currency.
