Northern Borneo Coins

The monetary history of North Borneo is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From the 19th century to the mid-20th century, this area underwent several transformations in its monetary system, passing through different administrations and issues of coins and banknotes.

Coins and banknotes under the British North Borneo Company

During the period of the British North Borneo Company (1881-1946), coins and banknotes were issued specifically for the region. The first coins, minted in 1886, included cent and dollar denominations. The banknotes, meanwhile, featured elaborate designs with local motifs and were issued in several series. An important milestone was the introduction of the North Borneo dollar in 1938, which replaced the Straits dollar.

Transition to the modern era

After World War II, North Borneo became a British colony and subsequently joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. During this transition period, the Malayan and British Borneo dollars were briefly used. Finally, in 1967, the Malayan ringgit was adopted as the official currency, marking the end of the era of North Borneo's own currencies. Numismatic pieces from this period are now highly prized collectors' items because of their rarity and historical significance.
