Oman Coins
The official currency of Oman is the Omani rial, which is divided into 1000 baisa. The rial was introduced in 1970, replacing the Persian Gulf rupee and the Mary Theresa taler. Oman's numismatics reflect its rich history and strategic position in the Persian Gulf region.
Monetary history of Oman
Prior to the introduction of the rial, Oman used a variety of currencies throughout its history. The Maria Theresa taler, an Austrian silver coin, was widely used in Oman and other parts of Arabia from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. Indian coins such as the Persian Gulf rupee also circulated, due to the close trade links between Oman and India. The transition to the Omani rial in 1970 marked an important milestone in the economic modernization of the country.
Highlights in Omani numismatics
Oman's numismatics are characterized by traditional and modern design. Coins and banknotes often feature national symbols such as the Omani coat of arms, historical buildings and the effigy of the Sultan. In 1995, Oman issued a commemorative series of silver coins to celebrate the 25th anniversary of National Day. In addition, the country has produced gold coins for collectors, including a series commemorating local wildlife. The Central Bank of Oman has maintained a policy of limited issues of commemorative coins, which has increased interest among international collectors.
