Pakistan Coins
The official currency of Pakistan is the Pakistani rupee, which is divided into 100 paisas. Since its independence in 1947, Pakistan has had a rich numismatic history that reflects its evolution as a nation.
Current currency in circulation
Currently, coins in circulation in Pakistan include denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees. Banknotes, meanwhile, are issued in denominations of Rs. 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000. The design of these coins and banknotes usually includes images of national leaders, historical monuments and cultural motifs that represent the Pakistani identity.
Monetary history and highlights
Prior to independence, the region used the British Indian Rupee. After partition, Pakistan continued to temporarily use these currencies, overprinting "Pakistan" on them. In 1948, the country issued its first coins of its own. An important milestone in Pakistani numismatics was the introduction of commemorative coins in 1976, celebrating the centenary of the birth of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the nation's founder. Since then, Pakistan has issued numerous commemorative coins, becoming a common practice to celebrate significant historical and cultural events.
