Puerto Rico Coins
Numismatics in Puerto Rico reflects a rich monetary history that spans from colonial times to the present. Today, Puerto Rico uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency, but its monetary past is diverse and fascinating.
Current currency in circulation
Since 1899, Puerto Rico has used the U.S. dollar as its official currency. The denominations in circulation include $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills, as well as 1 centavo, 5 centavos, 10 centavos, 25 centavos and 1 dollar coins. Although Puerto Rico does not issue its own currency, there have been commemorative issues related to the island, such as the quarter dollar of the "America the Beautiful" series dedicated to the El Yunque National Forest in 2012.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the U.S. dollar, Puerto Rico used various currencies, including the Spanish peso and the Puerto Rican peso. An important milestone was the issuance of provincial paper money in 1812, during the Spanish occupation. In 1895, the Puerto Rican 1 centavo coin was minted, which is highly prized by collectors. During the transition to U.S. rule, the "Puerto Rican dollar" was issued in 1898, which was quickly replaced by the U.S. dollar. These monetary changes reflect the island's complex political and economic history.
