Rhodesia Coins

Rhodesia' s monetary history is fascinating and reflects the country's political and economic changes. From its independence in 1965 until its transformation into Zimbabwe in 1980, Rhodesia underwent several changes in its monetary system and coinage.

Currency and monetary system

Initially, Rhodesia used the Rhodesian pound, which was at par with the British pound sterling. In 1970, the country adopted a new decimal system, introducing the Rhodesian dollar. Coins minted included denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 25 cents, as well as 1 dollar. These pieces often featured motifs of local fauna and flora, as well as national symbols such as the saber bird.

Numismatic milestones

An important milestone in Rhodesian numismatics was the issuance of gold coins in 1966 to commemorate the first anniversary of independence. These pieces are now highly coveted by collectors. Another significant event was the introduction of high-value banknotes during the hyperinflation years of the 1970s, including a Rhodesian $100 bill in 1979, shortly before the transition to Zimbabwe. Rhodesian numismatics is a tangible testimony to a turbulent period in African history.
