Romania - Reigns (1866-1947) Coins
The official currency of Romania is the Romanian leu (RON), introduced in 2005 as a successor to the old leu. The Romanian monetary system has undergone several changes throughout its history, reflecting the country's political and economic transformations.
Current currency in circulation
The modern Romanian leu is divided into 100 bani and is available in coins of 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani, as well as banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 lei. The National Bank of Romania is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency. Since its introduction, the leu has maintained relative stability, although it has experienced fluctuations against other major currencies.
Monetary history and highlights
Prior to the current leu, Romania used different monetary systems, including the old leu introduced in 1867. An important milestone in Romanian numismatics was the issuance of the first gold coin in 1868, known as the "20 lei". During the communist period, the leu underwent several devaluations. In 2005, a monetary reform was implemented that eliminated four zeros from the old leu, giving rise to the current currency and marking a new chapter in the country's economic history.
