Saarland Coins

Saarland' s monetary history is fascinating and reflects the political changes the region experienced during the 20th century. After World War II, Saarland had a brief period of monetary independence before being fully integrated into the German monetary system.

The Saarland Franc

After World War II, Saarland came under French administration. In 1947, the Saar franc was introduced as the official currency. This currency was pegged to the French franc and specific banknotes and coins were issued for the region. Denominations included coins of 10, 20, 50 and 100 francs, as well as higher denominations. This period represented a unique milestone in Saarland numismatics, as it was the only time the region had its own distinctive currency.

Transition to the Deutsche Mark

In 1957, following a referendum, Saarland was reintegrated into West Germany. As a result, on July 6, 1959, the official transition from the Saarland Franc to the Deutsche Mark took place. This change marked the end of Saarland's brief era of monetary independence. Thereafter, the region fully adopted the German monetary system, using the same coins and banknotes as the rest of West Germany. This event is considered a turning point in Saarland's numismatic history, symbolizing its full economic and political integration into Germany.
