Saint Lucia Coin List

St. Lucia, a Caribbean island nation, has a fascinating monetary history that reflects its colonial past and its evolution as an independent country. Currently, the official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, shared with other members of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.

Current currency and monetary system

The East Caribbean dollar was introduced in 1965, replacing the British West Indies dollar. This currency is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a fixed rate of 2.70 East Caribbean dollars to 1 U.S. dollar. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10 and 25 cents, as well as $1, while banknotes come in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $20, $50 and $100.

Monetary and Numismatic History

Prior to the adoption of the Eastern Caribbean dollar, St. Lucia used a variety of currencies, including the Spanish real and the Spanish dollar during the colonial period. An important milestone in Saint Lucia's numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1987 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the country's independence. These coins, minted in silver and gold, featured emblematic images of the island and became highly prized collector's items among numismatists.
