Samoa Coins
The official currency of Samoa is the Samoan tālā, which is divided into 100 sene. Samoa's current monetary system reflects its history and economic development as an independent South Pacific nation.
Current currency in circulation
The Samoan tālā was introduced in 1967, replacing the Western Samoan pound. Coins of 10, 20 and 50 sene, as well as 1 and 2 tālā are currently in circulation. Banknotes in use are 5, 10, 20, 20, 50 and 100 tālā. The Central Bank of Samoa is responsible for issuing and regulating the national currency.
Monetary history and relevant facts.
Prior to the introduction of the tālā, Samoa used various foreign currencies, including the German mark during the colonial period and the New Zealand pound. An important milestone in Samoan numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1974 to celebrate the South Pacific Games. In addition, in 2011, Samoa launched a series of collector coins to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its independence, highlighting the country's rich culture and history.
