Lire Coin List

The San Marino lira was the official currency of the Republic of San Marino from 1864 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. During this period, San Marino maintained a close monetary relationship with Italy, adopting a monetary system parallel to the Italian one.

History and evolution of the San Marino lira

The San Marino lira was introduced in 1864, following the model of the Italian lira. San Marino did not have the right to mint its own coins until 1864, when an agreement was signed with the Kingdom of Italy. Initially, San Marino coins were identical to the Italian coins in weight and composition, differing only in the designs. Over the years, San Marino issued a variety of commemorative coins, which became coveted by collectors around the world. The Republic also issued banknotes of its own, albeit in limited quantities, with Italian banknotes being more common in circulation.

Characteristics and designs of San Marino coins

San Marino coins were characterized by unique designs that reflected the history and culture of the small state. Common motifs included the three towers of Monte Titano, the coat of arms of the Republic, and portraits of important historical figures. Denominations included 1, 2, 5, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 lire. San Marino commemorative coins were especially prized for their mintage quality and artistic designs. In the last years before the adoption of the euro, San Marino issued a series of bimetallic 500 and 1000 lira coins, which became highly sought-after collector's items. The transition to the euro in 2002 marked the end of the San Marino lira, but the Republic continued to issue euro coins with its own designs, thus maintaining its numismatic tradition.
