Saint Helena and Ascencion Coins
St. Helena and Ascension are British overseas territories that share a common monetary history. These remote islands in the South Atlantic have had an interesting numismatic evolution, going through different monetary systems until reaching their current currency.
Current currency in circulation
Currently, the official currency on St. Helena and Ascension is the St. Helena pound, which is at par with the British pound sterling. This currency was introduced in 1976 and is divided into 100 pence. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 pence, as well as £1 and £2. Banknotes are issued in £5, £10 and £20 denominations. The Bank of St. Helena is responsible for the issuance and control of this currency.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the introduction of the St. Helena pound, these islands used various currencies throughout their history. During the 19th century, British coins and coins from other colonies circulated. In 1821, a special copper coin was issued for St. Helena, which was used until the middle of the 19th century. A numismatic highlight occurred in 1984, when a commemorative 25 pence coin was minted to celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. Helena's status as a British colony. In addition, in 2002, a special series of coins was issued to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Ascension Island.
