Saudi Arabia Coins
The official currency of Saudi Arabia is the Saudi riyal, which is divided into 100 halalas. This monetary system has a rich history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the economic and political evolution of the country.
Current currency in circulation
The modern Saudi riyal was introduced in 1932, coinciding with the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Currently, coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 halalas, as well as 1 and 2 riyals are in circulation. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 riyals. The design of coins and banknotes usually includes Islamic motifs and national symbols, such as the date palm and crossed swords.
Monetary history and highlights
Prior to the Saudi riyal, the region used a variety of currencies, including the Mary Theresa thaler and Ottoman coins. An important milestone was the creation of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency in 1952, which later became the Central Bank of Saudi Arabia. In 1960, the country adopted the gold standard, linking the riyal to the U.S. dollar, a relationship that remains to this day. Saudi numismatics is also notable for its commemorative issues, such as the coins minted to celebrate the Kingdom's centenary in 1999.
