Serbia - Republic of Serbia (2003-?) Coins
The official currency of Serbia is the Serbian dinar, which has been the country's currency since its independence in 2006. Serbia's monetary history and numismatics reflect the political and economic changes the region has experienced over the centuries.
Current currency and its recent history
The modern Serbian dinar is divided into 100 paras, although in practice para coins are no longer used due to their low value. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10 and 20 dinars, while banknotes range from 10 to 5000 dinars. The current Serbian dinar is a continuation of the Yugoslav dinar, which was used in Serbia and Montenegro until 2003, when it was replaced by the National Bank of Serbia dinar.
Monetary and numismatic history
Serbia's numismatic history dates back to the Middle Ages, when Serbian rulers minted their own coins. During the Ottoman period, various currencies were used, including the akçe and the para Turk. In the 19th century, Serbia regained its independence and reintroduced the dinar. An important milestone in Serbian numismatics was the issuance of the first modern gold coin in 1879, known as the "Milandor", in honor of Prince Milan Obrenović. Throughout the 20th century, the Serbian currency underwent several changes due to wars and hyperinflation, culminating in the introduction of the current dinar after the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
