Seychelles Coins
The official currency of Seychelles is the Seychelles Rupee, which is divided into 100 cents. This monetary system has an interesting history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the economic and political evolution of this Indian Ocean archipelago.
Monetary history
Prior to the introduction of the Seychelles rupee, the country used several different currencies. During the colonial period, Seychelles used the Mauritian rupee and later the East African rupee. In 1914, the first Seychelles-specific banknotes were issued, although still pegged to the Mauritian rupee. The Seychelles rupee was officially established in 1976, coinciding with the country's independence from the United Kingdom.
Numismatic highlights
The Seychelles numismatics presents several interesting aspects. In 1982, coins of 1 and 5 rupees were introduced, replacing banknotes of these denominations. A significant milestone occurred in 2016, when the Central Bank of Seychelles issued a new series of banknotes and coins with updated designs depicting the unique flora and fauna of the archipelago. In addition, Seychelles has issued several commemorative coins over the years, including a series dedicated to endangered species, which are highly prized by collectors.
