The official currency of Sierra Leone is the leone (SLL). Introduced in 1964, it has undergone significant changes over the years, reflecting the country's history and economy.
Current currency in circulation
The current leone is divided into 100 cents, although due to inflation, cent coins are no longer used. The denominations in circulation include 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 leone bills . In 2022, the government implemented a redenomination of the leone, removing three zeros from the currency to combat inflation and simplify transactions.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the leone, Sierra Leone used the British West African pound until 1964. An interesting fact in Sierra Leone numismatics is the issuance of commemorative gold and silver collector's coins, often featuring local fauna and flora themes. In addition, during the civil war (1991-2002), coin production was affected, resulting in cash shortages and use of foreign currencies in some areas of the country.
