Solomon Islands Coins

The Solomon Islands, an island country in Oceania, has an interesting numismatic history that reflects its colonial past and its evolution as an independent nation. Currently, the official currency is the Solomon Islands dollar, which is divided into 100 cents.

Current currency and its history

The Solomon Islands dollar was introduced in 1977, replacing the Australian dollar. Initially, coins were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10 and 20 cents, as well as 1 dollar. Banknotes were printed in denominations of 2, 5, 10 and 20 dollars. Over the years, several commemorative issues have been made, including coins celebrating local wildlife and important historical events.

Significant numismatic milestones

A significant milestone in Solomon Islands numismatics was the issuance of the $1 coin in 2012, which featured a unique design with a hole in the center, similar to ancient Chinese coins. In addition, in 2018, the Solomon Islands released a series of commemorative gold and silver coins to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its independence, highlighting the country's rich culture and biodiversity. These special issues have attracted the attention of collectors from around the world, increasing interest in the island nation's numismatics.
