Council of Santander,Palencia and Burgos Coin List

The Council of Santander, Palencia and Burgos was a political body created during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. This council issued its own coins as an emergency measure in the face of the shortage of circulating currency, reflecting the complex monetary situation of the conflict.

Historical context and creation of the Council

After the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936, the territory controlled by the Republican side was fragmented. In northern Spain, several regional bodies were formed to manage the territories loyal to the Republic. The Council of Santander, Palencia and Burgos was established in August 1936, grouping these provinces under an autonomous government. The need to keep the economy running led the Council to take exceptional measures, among them the issuance of its own currency to alleviate the lack of circulating cash.

Monetary issues of the Council

The coins issued by the Council of Santander, Palencia and Burgos were characterized by their provisional nature and their manufacture with not very noble materials. Coins of 50 centimos and 1 peseta were minted in 1937, using an alloy of copper and zinc. The design of these coins was simple, showing on the obverse the Council's coat of arms and on the reverse the face value and the year of minting. These issues had a circulation limited to the territory controlled by the Council and their validity was ephemeral, ceasing with the fall of Santander into the hands of the national side in August 1937. Today, these coins are pieces of great interest for collectors and historians, as they represent a tangible testimony of this complex period of Spanish history.
