Spain-Civil War - Council of Santander,Palencia and Burgos Coins

The monetary history of Spain during the Civil War ( 1936-1939) is a fascinating chapter in the country's numismatic history. This turbulent period saw a great diversity of monetary issues, reflecting the political and territorial division of the nation.

Coinage in the Republican Zone

In the territory controlled by the Republic, various types of coins and banknotes were issued. The Republican government continued to mint silver coins of 1 and 2 pesetas, although with modified designs. Emergency banknotes were also issued by local governments and trade unions to alleviate cash shortages. An important milestone was the issuance of silver certificates in 1938, which replaced the silver coins in circulation.

Currency in the national zone

In the Nationalist-controlled territory, pre-existing coins and banknotes were initially used. However, as the war progressed, they began to issue their own currency. A relevant fact was the minting of 25 cent cupronickel coins in 1938, known as "rubias" because of their color. In addition, banknotes were issued by the Banco de España of Burgos, which would be the basis of the post-war monetary system. This monetary duality reflects the political and economic complexity of this period in Spanish history.
