A special anniversary for the Eurozone was well worth a commemorative coin
During the first half of 2009, a commemorative 2-euro coin was launched to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in the Eurozone.
The design, selected from among five finalist options voted for by citizens of the European Union via the Internet, is the work of sculptor George Stamatopoulos, who works at the Central Bank of Greece. The design features a primitive drawing (similar to a cave drawing, which is why it is known as the 2 euro doll coin), standing out for its originality and symbolism, capturing the essence of the economic and monetary integration that has defined the region for a decade. This coin is issued by all the countries of the euro zone, with the name of the issuing country and the legend "EMU 1999-2009" in the respective language or languages.
