Sri Lanka Coins
The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee, which is divided into 100 cents. The country has a rich numismatic history dating back centuries, reflecting the various cultural and political influences that have shaped the nation.
Current currency and its recent history
The Sri Lankan rupee was introduced in 1872, replacing the Indian rupee. Since then, it has undergone several changes in design and denominations. Currently, coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees circulate, as well as banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 rupees. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka is responsible for issuing and regulating the national currency.
Monetary and numismatic history
Prior to the rupee, Sri Lanka used various forms of money, including cowrie shells and gold and silver coins during the medieval period. During Portuguese, Dutch and British colonization, European coins were introduced. An important milestone in Sri Lankan numismatics was the discovery of the "Jetavanaramaya hoard" in 1982, which contained over 200,000 ancient coins, providing valuable information on the country's monetary history.
