Guilder (1826-2003) Coins

The Surinamese guilder, also known as the guilder, was the official currency of Suriname from 1826 to 2003. During this period, the Surinamese guilder underwent several changes in its design and value, reflecting the history and economic evolution of the country.

Origin and evolution of the Surinamese guilder

The Surinamese guilder was introduced in 1826, replacing the Dutch guilder previously used in the colony. Initially, the Surinamese guilder was pegged to the Dutch guilder in a parity relationship. The first coins minted for Suriname were silver pieces of 1/4 guilder, issued in 1679. However, it was not until the 19th century that a more complete monetary system was established. In 1962, the Central Bank of Suriname assumed responsibility for issuing the national currency, marking an important milestone in the country's monetary history.

Coin designs and denominations

Throughout its history, the Surinamese guilder featured a variety of designs and denominations. The most common coins included 1, 5, 10, 25 and 100 cents, as well as 1 and 2.5 guilders. The designs on these coins often reflected local flora and fauna, as well as important national symbols. For example, the 1 centavo coin featured an image of Suriname's national flower, the Faya Lobi. In 1988, a new series of coins was introduced with modernized designs, which included depictions of historical buildings and prominent figures in Surinamese history. These coins circulated until the introduction of the Surinamese dollar in 2004, which replaced the guilder at a rate of 1000 guilders to 1 Surinamese dollar.
