Haldenstein Coin List
The Haldenstein era in Switzerland represents a fascinating chapter in the numismatic history of the Swiss cantons. During this period, which mainly spans the 16th and 17th centuries, the small barony of Haldenstein, located in the canton of Graubünden, was noted for its production of unique and historically valuable coins.
The rise of the Haldenstein mint
The Haldenstein mint was established in 1611 by Baron Thomas von Schauenstein-Ehrenfels, who obtained the minting right from Emperor Rudolf II. This grant allowed Haldenstein to issue its own coins, an unusual practice for such a small barony. Early mintages included thalers, ducats and kreuzer, which quickly gained popularity due to their high quality and distinctive designs. The motifs on these coins often featured the Schauenstein family coat of arms, as well as Latin inscriptions celebrating the baron's authority and the importance of the barony.
Haldenstein's numismatic legacy
Haldenstein coins are highly valued by modern collectors due to their rarity and historical significance. Among the most notable pieces are the 1622 thalers, which feature an elaborate portrait of Baron Thomas, and the 1617 gold ducats, known for their exquisite craftsmanship. Coin production at Haldenstein continued under Thomas's successors, including his son Gubert, until 1701, when the right of coinage was revoked by Emperor Leopold I. This brief but prolific period of coinage left a lasting legacy, offering a unique window into the complex network of monetary authorities in the early modern Swiss Confederation.
