Lausanne Coin List

The city of Lausanne, located in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, has a rich numismatic history dating back to the Middle Ages. For centuries, Lausanne and the surrounding Swiss cantons minted their own coins, reflecting the autonomy and diversity of the region prior to Swiss monetary unification.

Lausanne's monetary system in the canton era

In the Swiss canton period, Lausanne issued its own coins, known as "batz" and "kreuzer". These pieces, usually minted in silver or copper, depicted local symbols such as the city's coat of arms or religious representations. Coin production in Lausanne was carried out at the local mint, supervised by the cantonal authorities. Lausanne's monetary system was interconnected with that of other Swiss cantons, often resulting in a complex network of exchange rates and equivalences between the different regional currencies.

Transition to Swiss monetary unification

As Switzerland moved towards political and economic unification in the 19th century, Lausanne's monetary system underwent a gradual transformation. The city, along with the rest of the canton of Vaud, began to adopt more uniform monetary standards in line with other Swiss cantons. This process culminated with the introduction of the Swiss franc in 1850, which replaced the various cantonal currencies. Lausanne's old coins became valuable collector's items, testimony to the city's rich numismatic history and its role in the evolution of the Swiss monetary system.
