Monetary history and highlights
Prior to independence in 1991, Tajikistan used the Soviet ruble. After the dissolution of the USSR, the country briefly adopted the Tajik ruble as a transitional currency. An important milestone in Tajik numismatics was the issuance of the first series of somoni coins in 2001, which included commemorative silver pieces. In 2019, Tajikistan launched a new series of banknotes with modernized designs and enhanced security features, marking a significant breakthrough in the country's monetary history.
