The monetary history of Portuguese Timor is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From its time as a Portuguese colony to its independence, East Timor has undergone several transitions in its monetary system.

Currencies used in Portuguese Timor

During the colonial period, Portuguese Timor used the Timorese pataca as its official currency from 1894 to 1958. This currency was pegged to the Macao pataca and was divided into 100 avos. In 1959, the Timorese escudo was introduced and remained in circulation until 1976. The Timorese escudo was on par with the Portuguese escudo and Timor-specific coins were minted, including denominations of 10, 30 and 60 centavos.

Numismatic milestones

An important milestone in Portuguese Timor numismatics was the issuance of its own banknotes in 1940, featuring unique designs with local motifs. Another significant event occurred in 1975, when commemorative coins of 5 and 10 escudos were issued to celebrate the 5th centenary of the discovery of Timor by the Portuguese. These pieces are now highly prized by collectors due to their rarity and historical significance. After the Indonesian occupation in 1976, the monetary system changed again, marking the end of the Portuguese Timor numismatic era.

Timor Portuguese is a country that does not exist today. It is now part of the Timor-Leste old coins.
