The official currency of Trinidad and Tobago is the Trinidad and Tobago Dollar (TTD), which is divided into 100 cents. This monetary system has evolved throughout the country's history, reflecting its colonial past and its path to independence.
Current currency in circulation
The Trinidadian dollar was introduced in 1964, replacing the British West Indies dollar. Currently, coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, as well as 1 dollar, are in circulation. Banknotes in circulation are of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars. In 2014, the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago issued a new series of banknotes with enhanced security features and designs that reflect the country's culture and biodiversity.
Monetary history and highlights
Prior to the introduction of the Trinidadian dollar, Trinidad and Tobago used a variety of currencies, including the Spanish real and the British dollar. An important milestone in the country's numismatic history was the issuance of the first commemorative coin in 1972, celebrating the tenth anniversary of independence. Since then, Trinidad and Tobago has issued several commemorative coins, including a series dedicated to endangered local wildlife. In 2012, the country launched its first $50 polymer coin, marking a significant breakthrough in banknote manufacturing technology.
