United Arab Emirates Coins

The official currency of the United Arab Emirates is the dirham, which was introduced in 1973 following the formation of the country. The UAE's monetary system has evolved over the years, reflecting the rich history and economic development of the region.

Current currency in circulation

The UAE dirham is divided into 100 fils. Coins of 1, 5, 10, 10, 25 and 50 fils, as well as 1 dirham, are currently in circulation . Banknotes are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 dirhams. The Central Bank of the UAE is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency, ensuring its stability and value in the international market.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the introduction of the dirham, the region used a variety of currencies, including the Gulf rupee and the Qatari and Dubai riyal. An important milestone in UAE numismatics was the issuance of the first series of coins in 1973, featuring national symbols such as the falcon and the gazelle. In 1995, a new series of coins was introduced with updated designs, reflecting the country's progress and modernization. The UAE has also issued commemorative coins to celebrate important events, such as the 40th anniversary of its founding in 2011.
